Choosing Between Free and Paid Internet Radio Subscriptions

There are several types of internet radio. It just depends on where you want to use the stations and how much you are willing to pay. You’ll need to factor in price and the music availability to choose the right service for you. This will help you determine whether a paid or free service is right for you.

Decide whether or not you mind listening to commercials. With internet radio this usually just occurs every few songs or even just a couple times an hour. Usually the paid service is commercial free. There might also be ads on the website depending on whether or not you have a subscription.

Choose how you want to select music. Most internet stations prompt you to put in a genre or song that you want to listen to. Then the service creates a specific station around each artist. Some services have more complex subcategories and genres than others. The disadvantage to this is that you only get to pick your music in general terms. If you want to hear specific songs by certain artists you may be better off just buying the mp3′s or albums.

You can also listen to traditional radio stations online. Many stations will also stream their broadcast online. This lets you listen to local stations at work where you can still use headphones without disturbing your co-workers.

A rating system is also something that differs between paid and free versions. Usually when you say that you don’t like a song it will just move onto the next song. However, there are usually a certain number of times that you can use this option with a free service. You can skip more songs or unlimited tunes with paid versions. Like traditional broadcasting companies internet radio still has to pay royalties for the songs. Paid services allow the companies to recoup these costs.

A radio station has several advantages over an mp3 player. You don’t have to spend hours downloading music. You also don’t have to pay for each song. It also gives you the opportunity to hear different artists that you might not know about. There’s also a mix of news and music together. There are several ways that you can take radio stations with you while you work out or run errands. You can use free versions but you’ll usually have to listen to or look at advertisements.

Look for a phone with internet capabilities. You’ll usually have to pay a monthly subscription fee for the radio service. You can get a lot of different popular internet radio services on your phone so you can take your music with you. A lot of these systems integrate your accounts so you can rate music on your phone and use the same stations that you have on the internet.

Consider your mp3 player carefully. A lot of traditional walkmans had the ability to listen to local radio stations as well as play tapes. A few varieties of mp3 players also have FM capabilities so you won’t have to pay a subscription fee.

Satellite radio and tabletop devices are another way to make your music portable. You can get a receiver for your car. You can also get kits to make this works with indoor receivers. A tabletop device works for a home or office; there are even alarm clock versions. The disadvantage to these devices is that each piece will only work according to the brand subscription so you can’t cross platforms.

You might just want to choose one platform and stick with it for car, phone, and internet tunes. This allows you to have a central point for all of your music. You might even be able bundle all of these subscription. Each radio service has different capabilities and price points.

Do a search for Online Radio, and you will find dozens, if not hundreds of sites that provide streaming music, actual radio stations, or both. Add to that the vast number of radio stations, or the many ways you can personalize some services, and there are literally millions of possible online music ‘stations’. So how do you choose from this smorgasbord of possibilities?

What are your actual needs? Why are you looking for online radio? Your answers to these questions will determine what services may be the best for you. Is it because traditional radio stations do not play the kind of music you want? You can almost certainly find an online music source that has your kind of music. You may want to look into Digital Audio
Broadcasting, too, if you live in a country where it is available. There are many more DAB stations available than traditional radio stations in areas that have it.

Are you looking for an online radio station because you are tired of commercials? That will seriously limit your options. Many free radio stations are paid for by commercials, although they usually do a single commercial spot at a time, rather than several in a row. You mind find stomaching a single 30 second commercial much less objectionable than a 3 or 4 minute commercial break. If you do not want commercials at all, there are streaming stations available that charge a subscription price instead.

Do you seek online radio because you want to find new and interesting music? There are two ways to go about this objective. Many services use some kind of algorithm to pick other music similar to what you already like. Essentially, it compares what you like to what others like, so it is limited to the musical experience of others. The other way is to find DJ-managed online stations that play genres of music you like. This has a better chance of finding that obscure song that just hits the spot.

No matter what your motivations, online radio has something that may be just perfect for you!
